Mathematics

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Psalm 90:12

New International Version

At Northaw, we endeavour to make mathematics both a wonder to behold and a subject never to be feared. We follow White Rose Maths. A scheme of learning and supporting materials supplemented by manipulatives, and various electronic and printed resources maintain an effective concrete-pictorial-abstract approach to mastering mathematics. Every child has access to either Numbots (early years foundation stage to year 1) or Times Tables Rock Stars (year 2 to year 6) from Maths Circle. The quality and variety of language that pupils hear and speak are key factors in developing their mathematical vocabulary and presenting a mathematical justification, argument or proof. Teachers help pupils to avoid relying on guesswork or unstructured trial and error. Calculators should not be used as a substitute for good written and mental arithmetic. Every class has a mathematics working wall. Ofsted’s research review series and subject report series have informed our practice in this area.

Adaptation for Inclusion

We want pupils with SEND to achieve exceptionally well in maths, and have constructed a curriculum that is ambitious and designed to give all pupils, particularly disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND, the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. The curriculum is successfully adapted to meet the needs of pupils with SEND, developing their knowledge, skills and abilities to apply what they know and can do with increasing fluency and independence.

Teachers can also refer to our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Guidance where classroom difficulties and strategies to support are listed by area of need.
